Lightning Detection Feasibility Study - Whitehorse International Airport

In 2018, HM Aero was retained by the Yukon Government to identify regulatory requirements and Canadian best practices for the procurement, installation, and operation of a Lightning Detection and Warning System (LDWS) at Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport. The study involved examining more than 30 years of climate data at the Airport to determine the number of annual lightning strikes, regulatory requirements for providing lightning detection, and identifying systems currently in operation in Canada.

Three appropriate LDWS installations were identified for Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport that would provide the required detection and warning capabilities. Cost estimates and procurement recommendations were provided to the Yukon Government, and a Thorguardian LDWS system was procured, installed, and commissioned in the summer of 2019.
