Airfield Rehabilitation Preliminary Design - Kenora Airport

In collaboration with PNJ Engineering, HM Aero was retained by the Kenora Airport Authority to prepare an Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP) application to support the rehabilitation of Runway 08-26, Taxiway A, and Apron I following an announcement from the Government of Canada that program funding was being increased to more than $130M for the 2021 and 2022 construction seasons.

HM Aero worked closely with staff at Kenora Airport to collect information related to construction history; identify stakeholder requirements and needs during construction; and to coordinate a geotechnical drilling and laboratory analysis to inform engineering design efforts. Following the identification of requirements and a site inspection, the HM Aero and PNJ team prepared two pavement rehabilitation design packages for the runway, taxiway and apron surfaces – issued 50% and 75% design.

A Construction Staging Plan was also prepared as part of HM Aero’s scope of work that was developed in close consultation with airport management, scheduled air service, medevac, commercial operators, and wildfire suppression providers to ensure that the Airport could remain operational as much as possible during construction.

In late 2021 the Government of Canada announced that the Kenora Airport was successful in receiving more than $8M in funding to support the airfield rehabilitation project, which was completed in the fall of 2022.
